How this site is built
What we hold ourselves to, in plain terms.
Built to WCAG 2.1 Level AA
The standard US health providers are measured against. New pages are checked against it before they go live.
Usable with a keyboard
Every link, button and menu can be reached and operated without a mouse, with a visible focus outline.
Real text, not pictures of text
Text stays sharp when you zoom or raise your browser’s font size, and a screen reader can read all of it.
Contrast and target size
Body text meets AA contrast against its background, and anything you tap is at least 44 pixels across.
Captions on video
Any video we publish carries captions, and we describe images that carry meaning.
Adjusting your own device
Your browser and device can do a lot. These guides are published by the US Social Security Administration and open on ssa.gov.
Volume
Your device and each video player have separate volume controls. Adjusting both usually solves audio that is too quiet.
Speech recognition
If a mouse and keyboard are not an option, speech-recognition software can move focus around this site by voice.
Other documents
The rest of our legal and patient-facing documents.
